Transforming Lives through Social Enterprises
Blue Mountain Social Enterprise (BMSE) is a movement initiated to serve the people of the Subang Mas subdistrict through community development. BMK is located on Pulau Jemara, an island to the east of Pulau Rempang, Riau Islands Province, Indonesia. We operate primarily through a local foundation and aim to engage the locals through 4 arms - education, vocational training, job provision and agricultural projects. These are achieved through goodwill partnerships with the local leadership and the Blue Mountain Kelong resort.
Our vision
Hope awakened, lives transformed through community development
Our mission
To inspire and empower Subang Mas communities through education, medical aid and holistic care
Subang-Mas Community
The Subang-Mas community is home to over 5000 people living in rural villages. Primarily subsistence fishing communities, they saw their livelihood jeopardised by larger-scale, unsustainable fishing practices in recent years. Kampong Jemara is one of the many villages in the community, among others located on islands such as Subang Mas, Kalok and Tunjuk. The rural-urban migration of young adults to Batam city has also left villages vulnerable and disenfranchised. With limited resources, existing poor infrastructure and lack of work opportunities, the people are left with few alternatives, and have been living in poverty for decades. In BMSE, we seek to journey with them in their areas of need, and serve as a beacon of hope to them.
Education and Early Childhood Development
Situated in a rural area, the village children face several challenges that impede the completion of their education. On the island, Primary School is provided for by the government. However many children do not have access to education prior to or following those levels.
BMSE has hence set up a pre-school service with a full-time volunteer teacher who is dedicated to the lives of the young ones. Having a spacious wooden hut as a classroom space, parents can safely leave their children in the care of BMSE’s teacher as they work. In addition, the classroom space is used to provide tuition to children of Secondary School ages after their school.
Secondary School education is also provided for by the government. However, these schools are less accessible as they are located in the city on Batam island. In order to support and encourage education beyond Primary School, BMSE provides sponsorships for transportation and allowance for teenagers who are willing to further their studies. We seek to walk alongside families as a whole, and support parents to allow their children to discover their potential.
Vocational Training & Job Opportunities
By leveraging on the existing business of BMK, we partner with volunteers and trainers to provide vocational training and job opportunities for the village adults. Modules include conversational English, culinary skills, hospitality service, computer literacy, and motorcycle servicing. These programs are offered at a token cost to the villagers and are financed primarily from the profits of BMK. BMK itself is an open door for locals to earn an income by building or maintaining our infrastructure, by working in the kitchen, and meeting you!
Agricultural Projects
Self-sustainability especially to a rural village requires a secure source of food and water. To aid the locals with this, BMSE developed a FAITH Garden Demonstration Project (Food Always In The Home). The aim of this project is sustainable farming - to provide for day-to-day operations of the kelong, while serving as a teaching platform to impart agricultural skills to the local community. This opens up for them an alternative source of income to provide for their basic needs.
